Headache
is distinct as a pain in the head or at the upper neck. It is very common pain;
one can have like other pains of the body. It has many causes.
Classification of Headaches
Headaches
have several causes, and in the year of 2007 the International Headache Society
decided upon a rationalized classification system for the headache. Because a
lot of people suffer from headaches, and sometimes its treatment is difficult. The new classification system permits the health
care practitioners to understand a specific disease completely to give the better and more
effective treatment.
Headaches
divided in three major categories:
- Primary Headaches,
- Secondary Headaches, and
- Cranial Neuralgias, Facial Pain,
and other headaches.
Primary Headaches
Primary
headaches comprise as migraine, tension, and cluster headaches. There are
variety of other less common types of headache.
Tension headaches are the most common type of primary headache and 90% of people
have had or will have tension headaches. They are mostly common between women
than men.
Migraine headaches are the
next most familiar kind of primary headache. An estimate showed 28 million
people in the United States
like 12% of the population experienced the migraine headaches. Women are mostly
affects as 18% of the women and 6% of
men experience the migraine headache.
Cluster headaches
are a exceptional type of primary headache. From the age of 28 to 30 people
suffer this pain.
Primary headaches are not the life threatening.
Secondary Headaches
Secondary
headaches are those that are due to an original structural dilemma in the head
or neck. There are several causes of this type of headache ranging from
bleeding in the tumor, brain or meningitis & encephalitis.
Cranial Neuralgias,
Facial pain, and Other Headaches
Neuralgia
means a nerve pain. Cranial neuralgia explains a group of headaches that arise
because of the nerves in the head and upper neck become swollen and are the cause
of the head pain. Facial pain and many other reasons for the headache are included
in this category.
Causes Tention Headaches
As
tension headaches are the very frequently occurring types of headaches. Their
cause is not known yet. The most common cause is reduction of the muscles that
cover the skull. When the muscles which cover the skull are stressed, they may shudder
and cause pain. Common sites consist of the base of the skull where the trapezium
muscles of the neck are placed, the temple where muscles that assist the jaw to
move are situated, and the forehead.
Symptoms of Tention Headaches
The
symptoms of tension headache are:
- A pain which starts in the back
of the head and upper neck and make
a band-like tightness / pressure.
- Explained as a band of pressure
surrounding the head with the most intense pain over the eyebrows.
- The pain is generally mild as
not disabling and bilateral as affecting both sides of the head.
- Not connected with an atmosphere
and are not linked with nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and
sound.
- Mostly it occurred sporadically
(infrequently and without a pattern) but can occur frequently and on even
daily in some people.
- Most people are able to work
despite of their tension headaches.
Tention Headaches Treatment
Tension
is life threatening and headache can affect daily life activities.
Most
people effectively treat themselves with OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) pain
medications to manage the tension headaches. The following medicines work well
for most of the people:
- Aspirin,
- Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil),
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and
- Naproxen (Aleve).
