Types of Depression

You can experience episodes of stress, sadness, unhappiness or grief in your life. You can feel depression on the death of your loved ones, loss of job or in some difficulty like divorce. These types of stressful events can be coped by most of people.

We can return to the normal life activities over few days or weeks. Types of Depression

There are different types of clinical depression which are as follows.

  • Major Depression

It is change in mood which can last for many weeks and it is very severe depression form. There is loss of interest, no pleasure in usual activities and irritable mood in this form of depression.  It can interfere with normal functioning including physical symptoms. There can be one episode of major depression.

  • Dysthymia

This form of depression is less severe and it can go for longer period of time. You can have periods of feelings between low mood episodes. There is no disruption in normal activities with this form of depression.

  • Blood Disorder

There are episodes of depression involved in this form of depress which can be severe with extreme elation called mania. This condition is also known as manic depression which is associated with bipolar disorder and known as bipolar depression.

  • Seasonal Depression

This type of depression occurs only at certain time of the year normally in the winter when there are lower daylight hours. This condition is also known as winter blues. It can be severe condition although it is predictable.

  • Psychotic Depression

Depression and delusions can occur at the same time in this type of depression and it can become very severe and sufferer can have loss of touch in this condition.

Adjustment Disorder

The distress state which can occur in relation with some stressful event of life is known as adjustment disorder. This condition can be resolved when stress passes. There can be depress mood as well in this condition but it is not a depressive disorder. It is thought that it is normal for elder people to have depression because of health problems or bad life situations. Clinical depression is usually abnormal and it requires attention from medical professional. Depression can be treated very easily and effectively in most of cases. Recognition of the problem and appropriate treatment seeking is the most important thing in this regard.

About 19 million people are affected by the clinical depression and about half of these people commit suicide. There can be major depressive episode in about 5 to 10 percent of women and 2 to 5 percent men during their life. All types of people can have depression but it is common in elderly people.
