High Cholesterol Level As an Objectionable Thing |
|
Cholesterol
is basically a fatlike substance required by body to perform its functions. It
is present in the cell walls or membranes in the body including nerves, brain,
liver, skin, intestine, muscles and heart.
Cholesterol
is used by the body to produce vitamin D, hormones, and bile acid for fat
digestion. Small amount of cholesterol is taken in the blood to meet the needs.
The excess of the cholesterol is deposited in arteries including carotid
arteries, coronary arteries, and arteries supplying blood to the legs. Cholesterol
deposits are in the form of plaques which can narrow down the arteries due to
which there can be signs and symptoms of the decreased blood supply. There can
be stroke due to coronary artery blockage and angina and heart attack due to
carotid artery blockage.
Cholesterol
and fat deposited in the walls of arteries can cause coronary heart disease.
Constant supply of nutrients and oxygen is required by the blood like any
muscle and this supply is done in coronary arteries by blood. There can be
decrease in the supply by narrowing of arteries which can cause angina due to
insufficient supply of oxygen. The blood clots are formed by the cholesterol plaques
which can cause artery blockage, stop blood flow and heart attack. The muscle
cells can die due to lack of nutrients and oxygen.
Who has
high cholesterol?
There
is different blood cholesterol level throughout the world. There can be lower
rates of heart disease in the people with lower blood cholesterol levels in
countries like Japan. There can be high rates of heart diseases in people with
high cholesterol levels. The men younger than 55 years and women older than 55
years can have high cholesterol levels. There can be increased risks of
cholesterol with increasing age.
High

thyroid, liver and kidney.
- Heredity: there can be influence of genes on the body and one can
have heart disease as a result of hypercholesterolemia in the family.
- Weight: there is increase in the LDL with excess weight. LDL is
increased and HDL is decreased with loosing weight.
- Physical
activity/exercise: There is increase in the HDL
cholesterol and decrease in triglycerides with regular physical activity.

the women before menopause. There is increase in the blood cholesterol with the
increase in age. There is higher cholesterol level in women after 50 years of
age.
- Alcohol
use: HDL cholesterol is increased with
moderate drinks but there is no decrease in the LDL cholesterol. Too much
alcohol drinking can damage heart muscles and liver. It can also increase blood
pressure and triglycerides levels. Therefore alcohol should be avoided in order
to prevent heart disease.
