Treatment
of diabetes completely depends on type of diabetes. Lifestyle changes and blood
sugar goals are set by the health care provider. A plan is developed by the
health care provider with the help of patient to meet those goals. It is
important for the patients to know about diabetes and its treatment. The
patient is taught about the condition when diabetes is diagnosed.
Type 1 Diabetes
- Daily insulin injection is involved
in the diabetes treatment with combination of short acting insulin and long
acting insulin.
- Insulin can cause problems in
stomach if taken by mouth therefore it should be taken as injection.
- The patients with type 1 diabetes can
give injections to themselves.
- The insulin should be stored and
injected properly by trained professional or health care provider.
- Insulin should be given about three
times daily and its dosage depends on patient and health care provider.
- Continuous infusion pumps are used
to administer insulin in supplemental mealtime insulin is used.
- The patient should eat if insulin is
taken as blood sugar can be lowered by insulin. There can be hypoglycemia if
insulin is taken without food causing insulin reaction.
- It is important for the patient to
keep the blood sugar and insulin dosage level.
- It is important to eat consistently
for size and weight of patients.
Type 2
diabetes
- The patients may have chance of
lowering blood sugar level without medications at the time of type 2 diagnosis.
- The obese patients should try to
lose weight.
- The patients should keep on checking
glycosylated and blood sugar. The oral medications can be used if blood sugar
and hemoglobin is high.
- It is important for patient to eat
healthy diet, lose weight and exercise regularly.
- The patients should take right
medication with right dose to get right blood sugar level.
- Two types of medications can be
prescribed by doctors. Insulin injections will be required for type 2 diabetes
to control blood sugar level. Oral medications can also be used.
Self-Care
at Home
You
will be required to make healthy lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and health
habits to improve blood sugar and to minimize diabetes complications.
You
can control blood sugar level with the help of healthy diet. The patient can
talk to the health care provider if patient is obese. The patient should eat
well balanced diet which low in fat and high in fiber consistently. There
should be same number of calories for same number of days with combination of
correct insulin or medication.
There can be reduced risks of
diabetes with regular exercise. You can avoid developing diabetes complications
like heart disease, kidney failure, leg ulcers and blindness with activity. You
can have very good results if you walk about 20 minutes daily. The exercise
amount can be limited in case of serious complications.
Use of alcohol should be avoided as
alcohol can contribute to type 2 diabetes. It provokes low blood sugar level
with alcohol. |
