Tricyclic antidepressants,
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are
major classes of antidepressant medications. There can be affect of SSRI on the serotonin levels in the
brain. Sertaline (Zoloft), fluxvoxamine (Luvox), escitalopram (lexapro),
fluoxetine (Prozac), Paraoxetine (Paxil) and citalopram (Celexa) are some other
medications.
TCAs can be
used in severe depression when SSRI
medications become ineffective. There can be affect of these medications on the
brain chemicals. There can be fewer side effects of SSRI in comparison with TCSs
in premenstrual women. TCAs can be
good for depression treatment in men. Clomipramine (Anafranil), Doxepin
(Adapin), nortriptyline (Pamelor) and amitriptyline (Elavil) are some TCAs which can be used for treatment.
Atypical neuroleptic medications are prescribed for people with unipolar depression. Clozapine can be used in this condition but
it can cause bone marrow and severe anemia which is not good for depressed
patients. Olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (seroquel), risperidone (Risperdal),
asenapine (Saphris) and aripiprazole (Abilify) are some atypical neuroleptics. You
can have the option of using non neuroleptic mood stabilizers if you have
unipolar depression. It can be good for people who don’t have any affect of
other antidepressants. Lithium, carbamazepine (Tegretol), divalproex sodium
(Depakote) and lamotrigine (Lamictal) are some examples of the non neuroleptic
mood stabilizer medications. Lamictal can be used for the effective treatment
of unipolar depression and it can be good antidepressant.
MAOIs can be
taken with many other medicines because of their interaction with medicines and
foods. You should also avoid some foods which are high in tyramine like wines,
cheese and cured meats. Phenelzine and trabylcpromine are some examples of MAOIs. The effect of atypical
antidepressant medications is different from SSRIs. Mirtazapine (Remeron), trazodone (Desyrel), duloxetine
(Cymbalta) and bupropion (Wellbutrin) can be taken if SSRIs are not effective. Antidepressants are taken by most of the
people to get better. It can take from one to six weeks for medicines to show
their effect and you might not feel better at the beginning. You should take
these medicines until you feel better.
You
should continue taking these medicines for few weeks even if you get better. The
symptoms can return if these medicines are stopped too soon. These medicines
are prescribed for longer period for some people to keep depression from
returning. These medications should not be stopped without consulting health
care provider. There can be withdrawal effects if these medicines are stopped
abruptly. There can be some side effects of antidepressants like sexual
dysfunction, tremor, nausea, blurred vision, insomnia, dizziness, constipation
and dry mouth. You will need to keep diet in case of MAOI medications taking. The
patients can become too depressed in some cases. It is important for you to ask
about the side effects off these antidepressants if it is prescribed for you. |
